Amid the lashing waves of the UK North Sea, where conditions can change within minutes, teamwork isn’t just important — it’s vital for safety.

In one of the world’s harshest offshore environments, Harbour Energy’s close-knit Solan team achieved zero recordable injuries across more than two million work hours over nine and a half years.

That remarkable record was built on teamwork and a culture of speaking up, according to Michael, Offshore Installation Manager at Solan.

“There was a high level of trust within the team,” he said. “If someone spoke up to stop a job or suggest an improvement, others really listened.”

This camaraderie was formed from the strong bonds within the workforce.

“The main takeaway for me being on the Solan is the team itself,” said Steven, Offshore Team Lead. “It’s such a close-knit team, it’s more like a small family.”

Giving back: Donation in honour of crew members

Winners of the team category at the CEO Safety Awards 2025, the Solan crew were given the opportunity to choose a charity to receive a Harbour donation.

They selected Prostate Cancer UK, recognising that the disease – which affects one in eight men in the UK – has touched the lives of many within the crew.

"Given the large male population on the Solan, and offshore in general, prostate cancer is quite rightly a topic which is being discussed more regularly now," said Michael. "I think if our donation helps to promote this even further then it's a good thing."

The power of the pause: Championing start work checks

At Harbour, the safety of our people and assets is our number one priority. We have comprehensive health and safety processes which we use to track and mitigate risks across our operations on a daily basis.

In practice, we always strive to do better and we work relentlessly towards the goal of zero incidents. This ethos is embodied by the CEO Safety Awards 2025 winner in the individual category, Michael, who is a HSES (health, safety, environment and security) Specialist in our German business unit. He was recognised for helping to pioneer start work checks.

These provide a structured pause immediately before work begins, bringing together existing safety controls to confirm that risks are understood, conditions remain as expected and critical barriers are in place and effective.

Michael was recognised for his safety leadership and operational excellence through his management of the start work check pilot

Michael chose to support Löwenherz Children’s Hospice, with the donation helping to provide care, comfort and support to children and their families during incredibly difficult times.

"I believe the contribution will truly make a difference and reach those who need it most," said Michael.

While continuing to support our people and their communities, Harbour remains steadfastly committed to improving safety. We’ll keep on learning, challenging ourselves and staying vigilant in upholding the highest standards.
